Structure of the nucleus

 

A nucleus of an atom consists of neutrons and protons.

Atomic number Z is defined as the number of protons found in the nucleus of an atom.

 

 

Number nucleons  A = Number protons Z + Number neutrons N

 

Example

The notation for a Cl-35 isotope :

 

Cl-35_isotope

 

 

 

 

 

 

This Cl nucleus consists of :

 

17 protons and 18 neutrons   (35-17)
